This year we have begun a very exciting new reading project. On Thursday afternoons a very special visitor comes to visit and listen to readers in the Learning Zone.
He has 4 legs, is a golden colour and loves being stroked. It’s Elis the Labrador and his owner Caroline. Elis and Caroline are members of a charity called Pets as Therapy. Pets As Therapy is a national charity founded in 1983. It is unique in that it provides therapeutic visits to hospitals, hospices, nursing and care homes, schools and a variety of other venues by volunteers with their own friendly, temperament tested and vaccinated dogs and cats.
As part of our on-going Celebrating Reading project Elis and Caroline work with children who are less confident and those for whom reading is not always easy. Our aim is for these children to be able to open up, share a secret, tell Elis about a success they have recently had or something that is worrying them. Elis particularly enjoys listening to stories and looking at the pictures whilst being read to.
We have already seen wonderful results in some children’s self-esteem. Many children who have had the opportunity to read and share talking with Elis are eager to talk about their dogs at home. Elis has heard some very funny stories!
We hope you enjoy looking at some of the photos of Caroline and Elis working with our children and listening to readers.
